Awards and Special Presentations

PSA Excellence Awards

The PSA Excellence Awards, sponsored by Symbion, are the pharmacy profession's most prestigious awards, recognising individual achievement and the important contribution that the pharmacy profession makes to the whole of Australian society. The awards acknowledge the achievers of the profession: those involved in innovative practice; those who are striving to raise practice standards; and pharmacists who, through their professionalism, provide a model of practice which others strive to emulate. The PSA Excellence Awards will be presented on Friday, 29 October at 9:15.

Pharmacy Student of the Year Counselling Event

The PSA Alphapharm Pharmacy Student of the Year (PSOTY) counselling event recognises outstanding pharmacy students by showcasing their counselling skills to the pharmacy profession. PSOTY provides students with the opportunity to implement their counselling skills using real-life pharmacy scenarios. Competing against their peers, they will be able to gain invaluable practical experience to which they can refer when commencing their pharmacy careers. The PSOTY final will be held on Friday, 29 October at 17:00 and the winner will be announced at the PAC Gala Dinner on Saturday, 30 October.

PSA National Forum

The signing and implementation of the Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement, combined with the Government's wide‑ranging health‑reform agenda, will see the professional environment in which pharmacists work change dramatically over the next few years. PSA is helping to drive that change through submissions, ongoing negotiations and liaison with the Government, and through the development of a policy White Paper to help inform the Government's way forward. To enable PSA members to discuss and debate the profession and its direction, the PSA National Forum will be held on Friday, 29 October 2010 at 13:30, at which an overview of the year's developments will be presented before the floor is opened to questions and discussions. This is a unique opportunity for members to discuss their concerns, raise matters of interest, and directly address PSA Board members and staff.

Motivational Interviewing Workshop

This two-part workshop explores the theory and practice of motivational interviewing to support and improve the therapeutic relationship between pharmacists and consumers.  In Consumer-centred communication for change, participants will consider key concepts of motivational interviewing and the rationale for using it in interactions with consumers.  Through group discussion, role play, case studies and group activities, pharmacists can interactively learn about effective communication skills that will help them motivate consumers toward change thinking and behaviour.  The second session, Theory into Practice, focuses on helping participants develop motivational interviewing strategies that suit their communication styles and cater to the needs of their consumers.  This session provides an opportunity for participants to practice their communication skills and receive feedback from peers as they refine motivational interviewing techniques that encourage consumers to engage in their own healthcare to achieve the best outcomes. As attendance for this workshop is limited to 25, the sessions will be run twice - Saturday, 30 October and Sunday, 31 October.
